Some of the Reasons Why More and More People Are Leaving EntreCard

By Scotty's Princess * 124 views
I was deeply saddened by the news that a number of my Top Droppers have now made a decision to leave EntreCard for good. One of them is WorldWide Travel Blog who has been a consistent Top Dropper across my blogs for a number of months and I will absolutely miss seeing his widget in my inbox. But guaranteed, that this isn’t goodbye because I will continue to visit his blog with or without the EntreCard widget in his blog.

With the increasing number of bloggers making the decision to depart from the realms of EntreCard, I have made a summary of some of the major reasons why they have come to a decisive point leaving the EntreCard community. Some of these list are picked from some popular bloggers and I will be linking up to them at the bottom of this post.

A CLEAR WASTE OF TIME

No one is ever compelled to drop 300 cards each day! But to get the best out of EntreCard, one must drop to the maximum 300 cards per blog. Many EntreCarders refused to be a slave by spending their time dropping cards and use up hours and hours of going through blogs. Once you don’t have a speedy connection, it will take you forever to finish the task more so if you’ll be dropping for multiple blogs. Knowing the tricks on how to drop quick in just a matter of 30 minutes would help. I have actually shared some of my Dropping Techniques in the past:
I do not know how I was able to manage dropping 1, 200 cards everyday with my 4 blogs since I also have a full time work apart from blogging but much of the credit goes to my cousin Allena of In the Eyes of the Beholder who does the dropping chores in my behalf numerous times. I personally wouldn’t think this is a poorly invested time because I love getting a glimpse of other people’s viewpoints and thoughts. I daresay I have quite learned a lot from other people’s various ideas.

POOR QUALITY BLOGS

Yes, EntreCard may have failed in strictly implementing the Updated Quality Standards but since quality is subjective I can’t say much on the matter. I personally love going through blogs on a wide variety of topics and categories and I can put up with anything.

Some thinks of sub par and poor quality blogs containing the following:

  1. Blogs that are nothing but paid posts- I have recently made a post out of this.

  2. Slow blogs- Yeah! A number of them takes forever to load. Please put that video off and please turn off that autoplay music! I’ve had enough of these blogs. Good thing I am using the No Script Add On feature so I’m not quite affected.

  3. Out of date blogs- It’s quite disappointing to see numerous blogs who were able to take time dropping their cards without updating their blogs. I can see lots of them. To get a wide readership, I understand that updating ones own blog is a must.

  4. Poorly written content (grammar and spelling mistakes)- Many of the bloggers are using English as a second language. I am no exception. I am still a work in progress but English as a second language is no excuse for me not to brush up. There is always room for improvement. Some faux pas though are understandable. We just need to double our effort in learning the art of writing in a much respectable level. That is, being able to deliver a clear and comprehensible message to our visitors.

Well, if an EntreCarder is too particular of the abovementioned points, I am urging you to report blogs to the EC admin so that they can impose sanctions on those identified blogs. Notwithstanding the points earlier pointed out, I feel that blogging should be open to all levels of literacy and topics. EntreCard must be very careful in imposing sanctions though as QUALITY per se vary from one person to another.

A COMMUNITY INFESTED BY WAHMS/ SAHMS

I felt bad when I learned that one blogger particularly pointed out that one reason he is leaving the community is because of the SAHMS. I do not want to rebut him but with all due respect to the SAHMS, they are wonderful! You see, to each his own. I have high regard for them because they were able to make the most out of their time blogging aside from child-rearing and taking care of their own homes. Creating that balance is not easy. I owe them much of my traffic and majority of the good friends I have acquired from EntreCard are the SAHMS. To all of you blogging Mommies, Long Live!

POOR SYSTEM

Unannounced downtimes and outages is indeed very annoying! At least we deserve to know when service failure would take place ahead of time so that we can adjust. Though EntreCard have failed to send us notices for service failures umpteen of times, I have to commend them for upgraded and better service.

JUNK TRAFFIC
EntreCard is a free advertising site. We are suppose to get traffic via the 125 x 125 slots we have purchased from other blogs. But since the price of advertising for popular blogs is too much for an ordinary member to afford, the ordinary members are drowned in the sea of active EC power users who were able to take advantage of the system. Added to this is the “drop and run” phenomenon where blogs don’t really get long term traffic. I can’t say much about this but since EntreCard, this blog’s traffic had gone up to 100K plus and I couldn’t have done it if not for EntreCard.

POOR MANAGEMENT

One of the things that triggered some members to leave was Graham’s decision in deleting some popular members from the system. Turnip of Power, one of my Top Droppers, have been deleted for using Twitter. Quite a number of members now think that is such a crappy and silly decision from the management. ENTRECRAP as they have called it should have known better. Does Graham believe in second chances? Is a second chance being asked?

Hehe. SAHMs are not the reason why I quit Entrecard ;-)

The reason in which I used the average SAHM blog as an example is that I’m not in their target group since I’m generally not interested in what it’s like to be a SAHM, but I’m visiting a lot of them because of Entrecard. Well, not anymore now.

I used SAHMs as an example, but to be honest, there are only about 10-20 blogs on Entrecard that I would still follow. There are much better politics, technology, travel blogs out there, and even better SAHM blogs. ;-)

There are a few very good writers, but most blogs on Entrecard simply don’t stand out. They’re not remarkable (and I realize that my blog might not be a remarkable blog either – I’m not saying it is).

Thanks for including the link, Lainy!

@ BAS- ISTANBUL EXPAT:

That is well noted, Bas! I understand you were able to visit SAHM’s blogs because of YOU DROP, I FOLLOW policy. You see them in your inbox and you return the favor, but it really doesn’t mean that you love their blogs.

Thanks for being honest and I respect your position RE: Most blogs on EC that doesn’t stand out and aren’t remarkable.

Your blog is great and I respect your decision in leaving the EC community. I know you will go a long way even without EC ;-)

@ JESSIE:

Kuya. Kahit na mag-EntreCard ka man o hindi, bibisita parin ako sa blog mo, hehe! Yeah, it seams the bounce rate is killing EntreCard and in the long run, small blogs like us won’t benefit from it. I hope I can learn some SEO techniques in the future for long term traffic ;-)

4

Thanks for the heads up, Turnip! I will surely do that.

Happy holidays!

@ MARIUCA:

I’ll stick around for a while longer as well, GP. Everything remains to be seen. For the most part, the only reason I am staying is the friends like YOU that I have acquired from here.

Ohh, my English. Thank you but I still have a helluva lot of things to improve, like grammar and all. Yours is great! I wish I have your coherence and eloquence ;-)

6

Ellaine,

I can only agree with what you have cited. Entrecard is a great source of traffic for small bloggers like us but I honestly do not have time to drop cards as often as I want. I’m not dropping out of Entrecard yet. Maybe next year.

7

In the end, the failure of Entrecard falls on it’s owner. He is not a blogger. He’s a guy that had an idea, dumped it onto a programmer, and said “make it work”. Blogging networks need to be run by bloggers. In early 2007 I will be relaunching the CMF Network. It will be run by bloggers for bloggers. Stop by my site January 1st for more details.

9

Hey Lainy! I tink I’ll stick around for a while longer, but your reasons are well-said. Btw, your English is excellent, and your posts are all so well-written, love ya! :):):)

This is an excellent write, Lainy-belle.

Here are some of my thoughts to add:

For whatever it is worth, EntreCard is FREE. And I believe that being FREE is the crux of the problem.

If EntreCard was a pay by membership service,I believe that EntreCard will be able to do far better service for its members, be more in control and eradicate some of the salient problems that continue to dog EntreCard.

When a service if provided for FREE, most peeps in like manner freely vent their grouses about what is lacking in EntreCard rather than what is lacking at their own BLog(s) – and of course, complainants most conveniently fail to remember that EntreCard is free.

Free means that it is free for anyone who decides to use the service or free to leave it.

Fact No.1
When anything is a FREE service, there will always be some negativity simply because it covers a humongous amount of registrants. Varying needs and varying expectations of the FREE service.

Fact No.2
It is next to impossible to police and to cater to every registered member’s expectation. Not even the older and more established Social Networks have done any better compared to EntreCard.

Fact No.3
There is more than meets the eye when EntreCard apparently becomes “slack” when daily drops are made. However, in their vaunted eagerness to have the drops done with total ease and zero discomfort, I keep reading at various BLogs rants and tirades against EntreCard. Perhaps it would be opportune to mention here that EntreCard does not own the telephone Companies, the Internet Service Providers, the bloggers choice of content in the BLog and is never a decision maker on the blogger’s choice of internet bandwidth.

Fact No.4
As with all Social Networks, there is the TOS, and that is meant for sanity to prevail in order for the FREE service to function. How EntreCard manages their TOS against an erring EntreCard member is their management prerogative. Unless of course, it is a paid service, EntreCard will have to divest themselves of autocracy.

Fact No.5

I personally dislike using EntreCard’s drop process BUT until today, is there anything else out there that does drives Blog traffic better than EntreCard does?

@ WINDMILL:

Thanks so much Windy for a very comprehensive and elaborative input. I so much appreciate it. I have actually reserved the points you’ve mentioned in my next post RE: Some of the Reasons Why I am Sticking with EntreCard.

Since EntreCard is FREE and we have actually gained from its free service, anyone is free to leave as they please. But I figure they can’t help venting out their reasons for their departure.

I must admit despite EntreCard’s downsides, It’s very hard to come up with yet another system which could equal EntreCard’s accomplishments thus far. We have the owner Graham Langdon to commend for that.

Merry Xmas Tukayo! Mwaaaah! :)

@ ELAINE:

I can’t agree with you more, Tukayo! I am more of disappointed than amazed seeing them drop 300 cards/day. You see, it wouldn’t take an hour to create a post and dropping of cards would actually eat up most of our time. For my part, I would be ashamed of myself doing it and it’s obvious that that type of EntreCarder is insensitive and doesn’t care for his visitors. What a pity…

Yes, Sis! Small bloggers like us certainly needs EC especially we are into doing paid reviews. Your English is great so don’t worry about that ;-) Blogging Mommies deserve such recognition and if not for EC, I wouldn’t have the privilege to have met you here. Indeed, EC is an addiction and it’s hard to cure, hehe! We must be cautious though coz our vision is more precious than dropping cards. Like you, I have eye problems, too. I am myopic. I couldn’t do my dropping routine without my glasses on or my contact lenses. I’m a complete invalid without them! 1000 grade on both eyes is really giving me a pain in the neck!

i have learned to heart EC sis as it has done a great thing in my paid blogging journey, i.e., with the traffic i am getting and i am badly needing. i am a pure bisdak so i am no exception either sa kanang ESL nga part. but i am trying to be better each time and i do accept grammar corrections and criticisms so they’re most welcome.

i am with you in that slow loading of blogs! huh, that, i must say, is not worth my time given the fact that i am a SAHM [bz not only w/ blogging] which leads to my next concern. hehe… i am a SAHM myself, and even then, my way is still drop and spend some time reading those blogs i am dropping to. only that because i don’t have much time like what we all claim, i can’t leave comments to all. Ba’s POV of SAHM bloggers are noted by me and i understand his side, and thanks sis for being a fan of SAHMS. hehe…

i am also thinking of going lie-low with EC as well. my eye condition demands restraining away from a pc screen so i am only trying to make my “rare…” blog the one to remain active with EC. but if i can make it, i still will try to have my other blog be that of a dropper. EC dropping is such an addiction that it’s hard to keep away from it! LOL

regards!

@ RARE JONREZ:

Why kaya hate nya ang SAHMS nu?basin nabiktima nako cia hehe!poor grammar (blogs nako) then everyday naa ko sa iyang page mag cge drop ehehehe!

@ TWERLYN:

I think it’s a myth Lermz that dropping cards would increase a blog’s PR. I’m not too sure though since Google is very unpredictable. Oh, the SAHMs. BAS has already explained his side. SAHMS are not just his target group so we just have to leave it at that.

Hi Lainy-belle,

You said: “….anyone is free to leave as they please. But I figure they can’t help venting out their reasons for their departure.”

This old man says: What these whiners are doing may be compared to having been given a free car ride to their destination.

When (s)he alights from the car, the first thing that is said to the first contact made, is that:

- the car they rode in was without air conditioning,
- no music, only the droning of an engine badly in need of maintenance.
- it had a “klanking” sound from the engine and definitely some nuts were loose,
- the seats were soggy and there was an awful stench inside the car,{(s)he won’t admit it was from her/his stink fart}
- the wheel almost fell off whenever the driver made a turn,
- the ride was wobbly because the tyres were not balanced,
- the brakes hardly worked at mandatory stop signs,
- smoke crept out from under the car’s bonnet
- it’s a miracle that (s)he is still blogging….

and it was a sheer waste of time riding with EntreCard.

i want to ask about twitter. i thought that there were a number of tips posted in entrecard about joining twitter? you mean this is not allowed?

Again, thank you for making such very implicit comparison. No one could have ever done it much better done you, WIndy… ;-)

I respect whatever reasons they have. I will stay with entecard but I won’t “kill” myself dropping. If I can do it fine, if not then fine too,….lol… Your post is very well written. Thanks for sharing.

Turnip: 2007? =D I’d love to help you out.

Bas: We can’t all be elite writers and have professionally written blogs. The alternative is to have an editor (how many bloggers have that?) or steal writtend content. I’d prefer that a blog be poorly written than blatently stolen any day. Many people blog because it’s a release, because it’s a therapeutic venting for them. They don’t do it to win prizes or popularity contests. I joined Entrecard for people to find my blogs and comment with support on my depression issues, and for the most part, I got that. Still, I dislike how Entrecard is handled and I probably will be joining the others in leaving shortly.

Lainy: I have reported sites 100xs over to Entrecard, one in particular that blared cockney accented news every time I visited it, with no avail. They still show up in my tabs through the toolbar, and they still blare that same noise. I know that having embedded crap that automatically plays is a mistake teenagers made on Geocities back in the 90s, not adults, even if they are ‘just joining’ the blogosphere.

41

I am finding my time constraints a bit of a strain with EntreCard lately, I do drop back but, I don’t go looking for cards to drop on like I used to..

@ CARNATION:

No! We are actually being encouraged to follow each other on Twitter. A lot of EntreCarders are now on Twitter. Twitter is highly recommended. Prior to Turnip’s deletion from EC, he actually used Twitter’s service. You can read more from this link: http://turnipofpower.com/banned-from-entrecard-for-using-twitter/

There are some awards for you, dear Lainy … on my blog. :) x

47

I don’t know if I agree with some of your opinions, but then we are all different I guess and that’s what makes blogging that interesting. Thanks anyway, and have yourself a wonderful New Year. Cheers!

48

It does seem unimaginable how people manage to drop their 300/day on multiple blogs …
So far I’m kind of middle of the road on this whole EntreCard adventure!
Time will tell -
I’m excited to see what new thing Turnip is going to unleash in January!
Sounds exciting …

Excellent post.

I certainly never do 300 drops a day as I use Entrecard as one of many ways to get visitors. I get around 1500 visitors from Entrecard a month out of a total of +/- 12,000 I get via blog directories, traffic exchanges and search engines.

Will pop by Turnip next month as I will always remember him being the first person to welcome me to Entrecard plus as mentioned it takes a blogger to know bloggers and their needs.

50

I haven’t left entrecard yet, but have certainly thought about it for the clear reasons you’ve already outlined.

I have never dropped 300 cards a day and I haven’t gotten a great deal of traffic from it and if I did, it isn’t quality traffic because people are just looking to drop their cards. I always try to leave quality comments on the blogs I drop by just to let them know what I think of their site and what they have to say. I have discovered a great deal of great blogs that I now follow all the time through Entrecard, but you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it.

People need to stop using the “it’s free” argument to excuse the failing of a company. There are plenty of costs involved. There is the investment of time, the investment of blog real estate, having to follow a set a rules, promoting another person’s network, and someone else profiting off of your blog. None of these may matter to you, but they all involve costs of some type. It’s a social contract. You expect a certain quality of service in exchange for what you put in.
