I know and you probably know too that my country is internationally known as the Philippines. Call it by any other name and it would confuse some and others will hastily check it out in the World Map.
So why use Pilipinas Kay Ganda?
Is Pilipinas recognized throughout the World?
But there is a storm brewing about the latest move to discard the 8 -year-old “WOW Philippines” by the Department of Tourism for “Pilipinas Kay Ganda”. And that is where I begin by first asking,
“What is wrong with WOW Philippines”?
Who outside of The Philippines is going to understand what that means? If it is meant to foster a greater influx of tourists and to elicit their vaunted interest in the attractions that my lovely motherland has to offer, it better be easy to understand at first reading.
By that I clearly mean it should be in the most widely used language except for Spanish but not in the local lingua franca, Tagalog.
It should be in English.
For all we know, Kay Ganda might be misread or mis-recalled as Gay Ganda and don’t we have enough of gays in the Philippines?
Furthermore, I think it is sheer arrogance to claim Pilipinas Kay Ganda which means Beautiful Philippines because there are definitely MORE beautiful lands and peoples in this World.
Branding a tourism slogan in a parochial manner has a sour taste to it. The slogan should be more generic and not claiming any distinction specifically to the Philippines. I’d say, “WOW Philippines” lends to that effect most emphatically.
Yeah come and get wowed or better still wow us with your foreign bills
Then of course why come and get wowed in the Philippines. Just “CUM TO THE PHILIPPINES” speaks volumes.
Now, now, there you go! Can you think straight for a moment. I knew you’d think of cum as being that. Naughty you!
You see cum is defined as….
–preposition
with; combined with; along with: My garage-cum-workshop is well equipped.
cum.
cumulative.
GOTCHA you dirty minded reader!
But back to where I was before cumming errr… coming to this. Ah yes, its about the slogan.
Well reader, what do you think?
I’d say let’s save all that money printing new Tourism Slogan Advertisements and improve the more serious problems that affect our culture-shocked tourists
Let’s see WOW Philippines and really mean it’s WOW by cleaning up the mess and the mismanaged tourists spots.
Let’s have proper organized Tourist Agencies who conduct their jobs to educate and chaperon our tourists with an air of professionalism.
These and many more improvements are more far reaching than having to hit the tourists right between their eyes with something that they read and will never understand, like “Pilipinas Kay Ganda”.
And for every lucky tourist who gasps, “WOW” when they see our demure beautiful women, let’s give them a prize! What say you?
Let it not be known that “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” sounds like the title of an early morning show at the Kap… network. Yeah, right, it is!
I rest my case.

@Windy,
What more can I say, Windy? You’re the naughtiest man alive! LOL!

I still want the old slogan – WOW Philippines! It is easy to pronounce compare to the new one. It will be hard for the foreigners to say the new one or in a slang manner.

@Hazelicious,
Yeah right, Pretty Hazel. Apart from that, there are still a lot of things to consider. I really wonder why WOW Philippines is being discarded when it still is pretty much fine.

I prefer the old slogan, simple, short ug sabotable hehehe. maybe the tourism is just looking for way to corrupt some money kaya they decided to make new slogan. bakit pa tagalogin eh most of the tourist in our country come from other country. pahihirapan pa nila mga non filipino to say the word. tama na yung kumusta, huwag na dagdagan ng kay ganda kasi tayo na yan day lainy whahahaha. jok jok true.

@shydub,
Hahahaha! Nalingaw jud ko sa imong comment, Shy. Like I’ve said, foreigners will never get to understand “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” at first reading, not unless someone will have to translate it for them. How to encourage tourists when they can’t even understand what’s written in the posters?
Good thing it won’t stand a chance now as Sec. Lim have decided to junk the idea after spending thousands of pesos for the grand launching. What a waste of money!
[Reply]
Well… Sec. Lim’s project the Philippines as “Kay Ganda” was already shelve as per Pnoy’s directive.
Now… I’m sure that the Tourism Department has already incurred expenses for the design (a copied design) and of course their SOP’s!
How can we shout MABUHAY when there are officials who doesn’t know how to better promote our country.
Let’s just wait and see for their next move.
Good day Lainy!

@Feron,
Well, as expected, the idea was finally junked. That’s what they get for not holding focused-group discussions and not tapping the expertise of people in branding. Branding in itself has its own limitations.
Good day to you, too Feron!

i prefer the former slogan – except if the current government wants the philippines to shrink from globalized to localized.

@Gee,
Pilipinas Kay Ganda doesn’t go well cross-culturally. People behind the new slogan missed an important aspect. People have varied interests. To country brand one’s own country limits the expression. They should have used something like a slogan which is multi-lateral and not uni-lateral like WOW Philippines
