DESIDERATA
(Latin for “desired things”)
DESIDERATA and I
It was around 1972 when I first saw and read DESIDERATA. It was the time when luminous and psychedelic colors were hip. You’d use words like “freak” and “make love, not war” or else you’re not with the crowd. Also the rage for posters that displayed inspirational images, poems and an assortment of Rock Bands in action.
Ah! yes, for readers who are from that generation, remember, it was at the height of the Flower Culture, Mardi Grass, the hippie cult, long unkempt hair and the explosion of sexual permissiveness, et cetera, et cetera that shocked our worried parents and their parents too. LOL.
I bought a poster of Desiderata and mounted it at my bedroom. This is one sublimely inspirational poem and it has remained with me till today.
Background of DESIDERATA
The common myth is that the Desiderata poem was found in a Baltimore church in 1692 and is centuries old, of unknown origin…………Whatever the history of Desiderata, the Ehrmann’s prose is inspirational, and offers a simple positive credo for life.
