A: When Bollywood goes to Hollywood, you get Gollywood.
Golly indeed taking it from the 8 Academy Awards that “Slumdog Millionaire” garnered at the 81st Academy Award event.
Over here, Singapore’s Channel 5 televised “Slumdog Millionaire” as part of their TV Broadcasting Station’s celebration of the Academy Award winners.
I watched it more out of interest; more to see if it really won 8 Oscars on merit.
In my opinion, Slumdog Millionaire can never be placed on the same pedestal of previous Oscar greats such as:
Gandhi (1988) 8 Oscars
Patton (1977) 7 Oscars
The Sting (1973) 7 Oscars
Lawrence of Arabia (1972) 7 Oscars
My Fair Lady (1970) 8 Oscars
Elsewhere, I read that the Movie’s portrayal is inconsistent with the Book of the same title.
I found the repeated flashbacks irritating cinematography. Flashbacks happen whenever each question is posed to the central figure in the “Do you want to be a Millionaire” TV Game contest. It explained how the contestant knew the answer based on his slumdog life experiences. The flashbacks were just too many and it made the Movie rather choppy.
The ending scene is a deplorable misrepresentation of true Indian Movie culture. The main character says, “This is our destiny” to his sweetheart. The woman then says to him, “Give me a kiss” and he responds by kissing her on her lips.
That is taboo in Indian Moviedom. Kissing and explicit display of sex is taboo in Indian Movie culture.
But for all its glorified success, “Slumdog Millionaire”, the Philippine Movie Moguls should take a cue and create their home version of “Old Smokey Mountain Millionaire”.
My rating for Slumdog Millionaire: 3.5 out of 5 stars

LOL! Natawa ko dun sa Smokey Mountain! Anyway, I haven’t watched this movie yet. Oo, I heard about this, super sikat nga eh, and it’s like everybody’s talking about this during that time na na-air dito sa Pinas. But I don’t know why I didn’t have the interest of watching it. Now, I’ve got to see that cinematography hehe. Sige may DVD pa naman kami, pagtiyagaan ko ngang panuorin.
And by the way, I totally agree with you na taboo sa Indian culture yung mga malicious scenes. But then, come on! Naglipana na din kaya ang mga hot scenes nila sa mga movie nila. True yan. I’ve watched one particular Indian movie grabe, hot!!
