Pope slams Irish church screams one such headline. There is wide media coverage on the matter of rogue Catholic priests in Ireland who are either alleged or guilty of gross sexual misconduct.
Well, as most of us know, it is not just in Ireland but there were also the same shameful embarrassment to the Catholic Church in America and of late new reports in Germany and the Netherlands. Is this the tip of the iceberg?
The Catholic Church now faces what could be considered one of her most formidable crisis in peace time. It is a crisis which undermines her hallowed fundamentals and her pastoral integrity of over 2000 years.
The sex scandals of the Catholic priests is not a one-off case. Like maggots falling off a decomposing body, it appears to be pandemic within the ministry of the Catholic Church.
Do you think that the Catholic Church:
- Should not make celibacy mandatory but allow their priests a choice – to marry or to choose celibacy.
- Rigorous priesthood training is flawed.
- Has failed to impart to their faithful and to others that in reality there is no such thing as a man of God.
- Has placed too much emphasis on the extraordinariness of their priests.
The Catholic Church considers priesthood as sacrosanct because its foundation is built on the basis of the Apostles of Jesus of Nazareth.
However, herein lies the immoderation. To emulate the teachings and the life of Jesus of Nazareth with their priestly functions, it does not equate that the ordained Catholic priest is indefectible.
To borrow selectively from the lyrics of Tim Rice in Llyod’s famed rock opera, “Jesus Christ, Superstar”
He’s a man
He’s just a man
In very many ways
He’s just one more

Sadly, the Church is the most political organization in the world. They acquire wealth beyond our imaginings but it never gets used to help the poor. Religion throughout the world holds most of the wealth of the world and it doesn’t get distributed to those who desperately need it. People just keep giving and giving more and more money but the money doesn’t go to the poor. Even Jesus it is claimed recognised that – when he overturned the money tables in the church as a young man. Who can say what the answer is – there is so much corruption in the world. So many people who would take the money out of the mouths of those who haven’t even got a teaspoonful of grain.
So many people giving money and contributions to so many religions but still there are millions of people literally starving to death – so desperate for help. Perhaps some day the world will change and we will place people before everything. Will any of us see a world like this – when people are valued above everything else? I hope so.
