Today, September 13, is the most beautiful day in the Universe. As I write this, the country feels proud of Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup’s achievement in the recently concluded Miss Universe Pageant at Sao Paulo, Brazil. She finished 3rd Runner Up; a placer higher than last year.
Supsup had been one of the heavy favorites even in the pre-pageant. She stood out from among the rest in the online voting poll, coming out second via the fan votes, next to Venezuela. The Filipino people once more proved its mighty online prowess when they showed support for Miss Philippines, which helped boost her campaign big time.
Before the Top 16 was announced, I was too sure she will be in the list. I just had the confidence that the Filipino people worldwide never failed her. I, myself, did my own share of campaigning prior to the last day of voting. I never got tired voting for our very own Miss Philippines
I was a bit disgusted though when one commenter posted that it’s CHEATING to vote 10x a day using the same email add. Her comment disappeared after posting that but I got it in my mailbox. She must have realized it’s downright stupidity to have said that. The Miss Universe organizers did that kind of format to involve the fans worldwide and to encourage the candidates’ nationals to show their unfailing support which we Filipinos did.
When the Top 5 was finally announced, I didn’t had any qualms that Miss Philippines will make it to the Top. The most awaited Q&A came which Miss Shamcey Supsup conquered with beauty, brilliance, poise, intelligence, elegance, substance and grace.
If you would have to change your religious beliefs, would you marry the man you love?
Miss Philippines:
“If I would have to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person I love. Because the first person I love is my God who created me. I have my faith, my principles. And if that man really loves me, he should also love my God.”
Her answer may not appear too popular for some especially to most of the judges, but I personally believe that she handled it exceptionally well giving out her answer with confidence and spontaneity. It also reflected her personality. She did not think twice about being sincere with herself. She did not compromise her beliefs just to please the judges or everyone else with her answer. Coming from a Christian dominated country where religion plays a vital part in a person’s life formation, her answer did not surprised me at all.
If I may just add, Miss Philippines is the lone candidate who answered in straight English. The rest had their own interpreters.
Though she ended up without the Miss U crown, I feel proud of Shamcey for giving it her all. To me, her sterling performance deserves to have coveted the crown but I graciously accept the judges’ decision.
To Shamcey, Congrats! You made us all proud to be Filipinos and yeah! You just made me proud too being a General like you.
You just proved that General Santos City is indeed the wellspring of winners

@Bill,
You said it, Bill. She gave honor to the Filipino nation, especially to our hometown, General Santos City. The Local Government is now preparing a hero’s welcome for her.

I live in Las Vegas and here we do a lot of judging people of character, morals etc… I believe Shamcey should have won, and SHE did win in my heart! My wife also feels the same way. IF the judges did not want to rule on a spiritual question, then they should not have asked the question. IF they were trying to ignite a fire with an unwanted answer – guess what, they didnt get it! they actually got the truth! IN YOUR FACE JUDGE! IT DIDNT HAPPEN the way you wanted it to, you wanted “NEWS ATTENTION” something that would make you famous for 15mins. and you didnt get it. People you have to look at where this question was coming from and the reason it was asked. Shame on you Judge – EVERYONE HAS SPIRITUAL BELEIFS that cannot be judged for its answer. JUST LIKE asking the question “If you could change the color of your skin- would you?” Or , “If you could change your language – what would it be? ! THANK YOU Miss Shamcey for Winning! – mike lunsford (las vegas Nevada)

@Mike Lunsford,
I couldn’t agree with you more, Sir. It’s a very sensitive question. There are actually a lot of people who have been prejudiced coz of religion. We all have our own personal convictions and beliefs and no one can judge us for it.

Questions that ask, Race, religion, Age, and sex should never be asked by any professional business- PERIOD!

I watched the pageant on TV and I think that I want to pay a visit to Supsup in GenSan and tell her to forget about that religion bit and about God.
I will tell Supsup to just look at me and drool instead.
