Third Judge Comment: Bitter Sweet

Across the board, most bloggers lacked originality. This could be seen by the repeated writing essay structure.

The Writing Contest Theme was “Blog to the World,  Blog for You and Me” which in itself would give latitude for the blogger to compose about just any story that befits a Blog.

Being a Blogger’s Writing Contest, I was expecting to be greeted with Contestants flaunting their overall blogging skills and not solely on writing per se although the latter does contribute to the largest score points.

There was too much mediocrity.  Fortunately it was refreshing to see a few outstanding essays and presentation from the Winners.

I congratulate the Winners for their well deserved effort and better luck on the next outing to the rest who participated in Lainy’s Blogoversary Celebration Writing Contest.

I’ve always tagged myself as a mediocre writer so no question about that. I am just really thankful for this contest since I blog but never write stories with a theme. Mine is more of a rambling with the ever long and running sentences. I can’t thank you enough for this experience.

ouch. though i am guilty, i’m hurt. LOL i guess there was too much and too high of an expectation from the judges. hehe… i admit i am mediocre at times, but too much mediocrity? i guess that’s too much to say!!!

[makatagam man ni nga contest sis oi! mao ni giingon nga: di na jud ko mousab! (kausa nalang!!!) hahaha]

    wonderful weekend everybody!

well everyone’s entitled to an opinion i guess, I’m just amused with the choice of words used to describe the entries. Constructive criticism would be welcome though that would depend on how you interpret what the judge stipulated on his comment.

anyway congrats to the winners whoever they are.

Well, this post by the last judge really made me uneasy. This kinda makes me inspired to keep writing and to improve what I am doing now. On the other hand, it made me think that I might be making mediocre write ups and it kinda makes me feel down. :(
    Anyway, we’ll find out soon!

Thank you again for the opportunity Lainy! I did not just found a way to increase traffic to my site, but I gained a lot of new friends. I can’t even think where to start.

This group made me feel at home in blogging and writing!

Thank you guys! Mga amigo kag amiga ko!

Wow from what i have been reading from the judges they were really tough on the contestants. My hat is off to all that joined this special event and to Lainy that to the time and effort to put it together.

  11. rosilie says:

I joined lainy’s contest out of friendship to lainy and not at all with the winnings. Most likely, the constestants had joined this with the same motivation – to get their stories known. Gosh! I never thought my writing skill as above average. But the comments from the judges sure stirred an irritating emotion. Tama si recel, makatagam.hahhahahah! But we love you lainy kaya mediocre or not, glad that I have met you and the rest through this contest.

  12. @ ALL:

I can not speak on behalf of the judges. The emotions that has been stirred by the judges’ comments are understandable. But I haven’t expected it to cause so much controversy and contestants taking it against them.

Just like what ZORLONE had mentioned, I was expecting the contestants to take it constructively and take it as a means to improve.

This is a contest. Needless to say, it’s not a walk in the park. A Contest will be treated as such and not a picnic outing. Though I am aware that most of the contestants joined out of friendship, you are all still binded by the rules. And this contest have jurors and it was in the contest platform that the judges will have their say. Now that they have spoken, they knew they can not please everyone. We live in a free world and you are all free to have your say as well.

The judges’ comments shouldn’t be taken personally. If one judge said there is TOO MUCH MEDIOCRITY, he is objectively appraising the contestants’ entries. To infer subjectively that he attributes the same qualities to the Contestant is totally illogical.

The word for mediocrity means average, not outstanding. If that is appalling, then I would have loved to have a good problem in having to decide 25 (one got disqualified) First placements as Winners to the Contest.

You would also agree that the contest Sponsors would like to see that their gifts were not wasted on a Contest that was shabbily organised and where there was no semblance of any seriousness with regards to the way in which the Contest was judged.

If at all any Contestant is aggrieved by the Judges Comment, there is one thing though, at least, they had the B*LLS to call a spade a spade.

  13. Hmmm, that I can not tell my cousin dearie, wahehehehe!

  14. Hahahaha! Pleading guilty????

  15. You are right, Sis! The judges expected too much from the participants because in this contest they assumed that contestants would give out their all. Sure, this contest is the best avenue for the participants to flaunt their best. But unfortunately, most of the participants took the criteria for granted. Everything is there and the judges are basing their comments on the criteria. I hope you are not bleeding from too much hurt, hehehehe!

  16. Need I say more, Te? :D

  17. recel says:

i actually am bleeding sis. :(
one’s best is always not enough to everybody. therefore, the best that i’ve given will never be enough to somebody, though it was enough to another. in any race, there will always be winners and losers. it is therefore a wrong assumption for the judge to expect the same level of greatness among the entries. i’m serious when i say too much mediocrity is TOO MUCH for the judge to describe the entries. i perceived it as being a description to the entrants as well. i may be just be too sensitive or really mediocre with my perception, but i think it isn’t fair for the judge to say such critique. it never signals a constructive criticism which i expect the judge to give given the fact that not all entrants are professional writers or bloggers. there are those who submitted their entries but are not after the prize at all and have not clearly followed the criteria– i know they’re aware of their entries to be that far from the theme.. however, i don’t think “too much mediocrity” is the right term for it. at any rate, i am thankful to be one of the participants of the contest. well, just my nonsense thought! hehe…

again, wish u a wonderful weekend! [hi to the judges!] :-)  :-)
