To Vee or Not to Vee

If you have not noticed the national past time of most Filipinas, errrmmm well most of them I may add, they pose prettily for photo snaps (that includes me, LOL!)

V for Victory, yeah!!

Their heads never straight, always bent left or right and their eyes looking, hmmm peeping out of their sockets sideways which is a miracle they never get squint eyed after so many photo snaps like that….

Star's version of "V" sign

Something must be wrong with their necks. Too rubbery? I don’t know really but they just can’t keep their heads upright. I wonder why…

Well, maybe it has something to do with the handsign that they never fail to display… the V finger sign.

The mother of all V's, hehehe!

Most times it’s done close to their face.
The shy ones show it at the hips as they pose hands akimbo.
Still, it’s the V finger sign, no matter what and where it is displayed.

Now, does anyone know why Filipinas display that V finger sign like it is a national past time? I am a Filipina and I assure you it’s not cultural but soon is becoming one.

P. S.
IF Shamcey Supsup had V signed at the Miss Universe Pageant, she would have been crowned Queen. Alas! She overlooked that unmistakable trademark of the Filipinas ;-)

    Ahhh Lainy,

So you’ve noticed or rather been more observant. If that be a national identity, just like how one can tell its a Japanese because of the camera hung around their necks, the “V” fingers is unmistakably that’s a Filipino(a), I guess.

The only explanation that comes to my mind why most Filipinas do that is because they are communicating by hand sign language that they are ready to spread their fingers…ermmm, I meant legs. And smilingly too or is that willingly too?

    BWAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA!

    @Windy,

Yeah, I have become a rather keen observer, Mr. Naughty Naughty Windy.

I must say that Filipinas are beautiful whether they do the V sign or not.

I myself even find bewilderment why I have come to embrace that gesture when taking a pose for the cam. I believe I have gotten that from the mother of all V’s, Star, hahaha!

Oh! Oh! That’s a very unfounded explanation, Windy. I know you mean it only as a joke, right?

    [Reply]

  2. Windy says:

    Hahaha Lainy,

What do you think? I think I meant it as a poke and not a joke.

But seriously, the reason for that V finger sign dates back to General McArthur as he showed it for VICTORY when he landed on the shores of the Philippines.

It remained ingrained in the minds of the Filipinos as well as his oft quoted proud declaration, “I shall return”.

Hallo dear Lainy …. well I hadn’t noticed the lop-sided head routine in photos …. now I shall be looking for it! Lol! However, not sure why so many raise their fingers in a ‘V’ … this sometimes spoils some wonderful photos. ‘V’ standing for Victory against the odds and in times of either a personal battle or major conflict should, perhaps, be reserved for those who have overcome a major challenge.
It may, of course, mean something entirely different in the Philippines.

You said it. At times, it just ruins the beautiful capture but we do feel that it’s alright and we’re just doing some wacky poses.

Thanks for the added input on the V sign. I haven’t realized that till you’ve made mention about it.

Oh! I am sorry to know a lot of peepz there caught the colds. You take some precautions. I don’t want you sick.

The Filipinos have made it a national pastime to “I shall return with my V” and God said, “There they go, increasing and multiplying”.

How come then, being man, I know more about the Philippine history than you? I should know more about the curves of the Filipinas instead.

ya, korek, we are so cam whores and we got the Vee pose from our Asian neighbors. this reminded me of one time i met a Japanese-Filipino girl in the States. She was born and raised here and looks more Japanese than Pinay. She said that it’s really hard to tell she has Pinay blood in her but according to her friends, the only time she looks Pinoy is in pictures, and she is seriously wondering why is that. Then I told her, maybe because she does the Asian “V” pose. She laughed, because she knows it too. LOL.

Lainy, I do like your new blog outlay … having the archive link at the top is wizzard.

Just a little note from me to you, here:
I wondered if now that you are queen of your own kitchen whether you may from time-to-time, delight us with a few Philippino recipes.
There was a top chef here on our television programmes who was chiding viewers and saying that all of us only need to use a recipe as a simplified map and that if we do not have all of the required ingredients then we should use something else. Apparently, this is the way that recipes are improved upon and how they are intended to be used.

So – if you are able to share some of the recipes that are your favourites and we cannot get all of the ingredients then we can still make them but change them slightly with alternative grocery items.

This is just a thought ….. I do hope that you will at least think about it. x

You see, I work on a regular basis and the only time that I can do my stuff online is when I reach home from work. I wish to experiment various recipes and just about anything that gets my fancy but time just won’t permit me.

But don’t worry, once I could find the time, I will definitely show it off here ;-)

  16. I always thought of the hand gesture as the “peace sign” – made popular in the 60s here in the USA. But, your post made me do a little research on wikipedia and it seems that this sign goes back as far as the 1300s. Nor, every time I see a picture of a pretty philipina girl I’ll be looking for a peace sign. Windy – leave it to a man to come up with a new interesting meaning to the fingers “spread” apart :) sheila sultani´s last [type] ..Squeeze Your Children Tight-Tell Them You Love Them
