Human Nature:Inherently Good or Evil?
By * 38 views
In my previous post
The Ideal Bureaucracy: Is It Attainable in the Philippines? , one intelligent comment from Brain Stormer caught my attention. It added meaning, depth and substance to the post emphasizing that human nature is inherently bad.
If I may just quote in toto:
The Ideal Bureaucracy: Is It Attainable in the Philippines?
Consider these three premises against that mooted possibility.
Premise number One –
Ideal: A conception of something in its absolute perfection.Obvious answer: Unattainable
Premise number Two -
Bureaucracy: a concept in sociology and political science referring to the way that the administrative execution and enforcement of legal rules is socially organizedObvious answer: A bastardised concept offers bastardised results.
Premise number Three -
Man: We must, however, acknowledge, as it seems to me, that man with all his noble qualities, with sympathy which feels for the most debased, with benevolence which extends not only to other men but to the humblest living creature, with his god-like intellect which has penetrated into the movements and constitution of the solar system – with all these exalted powers – Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin. (which in this instance of lowly origin Darwin meant, the Apes)
(by Charles Darwin – The Descent of Man)and elsewhere,
“Vitiis nemo sine nascitur.”
(Horat)Translation:
“Man is by nature bad.”Man is bad can only mean that man is conscious of the moral law, and yet has adopted into his maxim deviation therefrom.
(by Immanuel Kant – Kant’s Critique of Practical Reason and Other Works on the Theory of Ethics)Obvious answer: Within the context of your Post, BOOreaucracy in whatever form it represents in your country as well as for the rest of the World is inherently flawed.
I have to agree on the three strong premises pointed out by Brain Stormer, that is, basing our thoughts on the issues of philosophy and anthropology. This is in complete contrast to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s romantic contention that man is essentially good.
However, according to some wisdom literature and Biblical precepts, God created both men and women in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, man is inherently good, accorded with the free-will to make the RIGHT and WISE choices.
But since ALL men have sinned (Romans 3:10) despite the perfect environment that God provided (Gen 2:8, 16, 17), we all have fallen short of God’s glory. Man “claim” to be good yet man do evil things. Man blatantly disobeyed God’s commandments.
Man have been blessed with amazing faculties that allow him to behave well or badly. Yet, man chose to corrupt himself and God’s image by adopting the bad habits. Bad alliances also contributed to bad influences making man’s natural goodness threatened not to shine forth.
It is an apparent fact that man have that “conscience” in him, he is capable of feeling guilty thereby making him neither good or bad. It is mere human judgment that stereotyped man as “good” or “evil”.
Yes, it’s true that God endowed man with the unique ability to discern good and bad, which obviously separates man from the animals, but we can’t simply teach morality and expect everyone to follow the rules.
Man don’t usually do what they think is right. They do what they LOVE to do and what makes them feel good.
In Filipino:
Masarap ang bawal!
Within the context of bureaucracy, most public servants are educated. Yet, education didn’t make them all good. It actually made them SMARTER SINNERS!
The main thing that we need to acknowledge is the idea that most people embedded in their hearts and minds: They are inherently good which actually kept them from recognizing God in their lives.
To wrap up, we have to recognize that we all have sinned before God. Only by becoming humble before God can we defeat the “evil” person in us.
I wish you blue skies and all things nice,

Great points! Reading this post, the idea of being educated, knowledgeable, and being wise comes to my mind. I don’t know about you but for me, being educated doesn’t mean one is knowledgeable and wise. Nor do being knowledgeable educated and wise. Being wise doesn’t need education and knowledge either. Because being wise is discerning evil from good and doing what’s good in God’s and man’s eyes.
Thanks to education. Thanks to the knowledge available for us to learn. But wisdom is the greatest of them all!

You’re right, Sis. This is where wit versus wisdom comes in.
It is often a point of contention that man is really pure at heart, created in God’s image. with a sense of right and wrong. This is actually the gift of wisdom that God gave us.
Education and knowledge taught us to sin if not put to good use. We do have our individual choices. Only God’s wisdom can direct us which way to go. That’s why it is the greatest of them all.

How true. We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. HE gives us a free will, to choose between good or evil. We have to rely on God’s grace and strength and yes, wisdom, to make the right choices every day.

Human Nature: Inherently Good or Evil?
Neither good nor evil if human nature is defined as “the sum of qualities and traits shared by all humans”.
Rather and more accurately queried, Humans: Inherently Good or Evil.
That to me can only be “judged” by the thoughts and the deeds of humans.
For example, to some SEX is bad and sinful. Oh, but it is not bad and sinful to me. I LOVE SEX. Therefore to those who believe that SEX is debased and sinful, am I inherently evil?
Some would say, YES but behind their closed doors they live the Arabian Nights.
But then to me I can do some really wonderful things with SEX! Even create life!!!
So are humans inherently good or evil?
It all depends. Had Hitler won World War II, the Germans would have him proclaimed as one of the greatest Saints of Germany. Too bad for Hitler, he lost, so the Germans today are ashamed of him and his deeds.
How we perceive good or evil is subjected to a lot of complex issues.
Would your next Post be…

@ BRAIN STORMER:
Now, now… You’ve just made this all the more interesting
Who says sex is evil? Sex is never evil at all. It’s God’s gift to all of His creations. Basing it on biblical precepts, it should be shared only by husband and wife.
Sex is a beautiful thing. It is only abhorred when it becomes the “lust of the flesh” because it’s not of the Father but is of the world.
It’s a good thing you love “it” . You must be married
Hmmm… You want me to talk about sex not being evil? Well, I shall be seeking your expertise on the matter…

More interesting?
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, SEX certainly is.
Bible teachings aside. I believe that God is a Supremely Sexy Being to have created sex.
Makes the Greek mythology about gods and goddesses more believable than the Bible by comparison.
Am I married. Yes to SEX.

@ BRAIN STORMER:
Yeahhhhhhhh! Certainly is!
We’re lucky God is Supremely Sexy. Otherwise, there’s no sex for men and women to enjoy
Is that a statement? You’re really married? Nosy, nosy me, LOL!
BTW, I admire you for speaking so blatantly honest. Not too many men could tell the world they love sex. The world we live in is so full of hypocrisies.

Lainy, once again another thought-provoking post you got going here. Now that’s why I have you teaching blogging literature at CI A&M(in yesterday’s post on my site, lol).
Anyway, I very much agree with Recel’s comment about wisdom. The line does get drawn between those well-educated and those that are not when it comes to knowledge. But it’s about the thought-process to change your way of thinking that no school or administration can do as it comes from within the individual.
It’s posts like this as to why you’re a WBE Blog of Famer!

Filipinos have salvation on hand. If Filipino Bureaucracy is inept and COMELEC is unable to jam the jammers from messing with the Poll count transmissions, here comes the almighty Justice to the land.
“MANILA, Philippines – A dismissed trial court judge who consulted a dwarf or “duwende” in deciding cases wants to become the Philippines’ next Chief Justice.
Former Malabon Regional Trial Court Judge Florentino Floro nominated himself to the top post in the judiciary, which will be vacated on May 17 when Chief Justice Reynato Puno retires.
One of the reasons Floro used to support his bid is his being a visionary and prophet.”

Hahaha! You’re very updated with what’s happening in the Philippines. RE: Jammers messing up the Poll count transmissions.
And the two news clips, I didn’t know all that. I have stopped watching the news altogether.
Might as well just talk about sex, LOL! Sure you would like that… Kidding!

Very good post and many points that you brought up. As far as humans being inherently good or evil, I believe we are a bit of both. I do not think there is anyone alive who can honestly say at some point in their life, they did something they are not “proud” of. Or in other terms they did something bad, usually against another person, either directly or indirectly.
God gave us free will for this purpose and we are faced with decisions everyday. The old proverb “do unto others as you would have them do undo you”, is something I try to always remember in my mind daily. Usually the easy way is not always the right way.
I guess everything comes in varying degrees of good or evil. Like a person who sells pot and a person who murders someone. While both are illegal, they cannot be considered the same in the eyes of justice. Although some people can argue that they are both just as bad, to me I don’t believe this.
While I am not condoning anyone to take up the business of selling pot, how can that person get a longer jail sentence then someone who murdered another person? Which can open a whole new subject to talk about. Sometimes I believe that money can be the deciding factor of right or wrong. Take OJ for example, is money bought him his freedom and not guilty verdict.
Some people have brought up the fact that education can influence peoples decision making and to a degree that is true. But we all have this thing inside of us, called our “gut feeling” and if we listen to it closely and follow it, then we always will take the right road in as far as right or wrong.
